Old Houses Added to Tien Giang's Attractions

Tours to old houses have attracted increasing numbers of tourists to Tien Giang. The number of tourists to this province has increased more than 10 percent per year, from 323,053 in 2000 to 960,991 in 2010, including 472,839 foreign visitors.

The leadership of Tien Giang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that it is the combination between water resources and old houses that has created a new face of provincial tourism. Together with other localities in the region and the whole country, Tien Giang continues to boost tourism development by investing in tourist sites such as Tan Thanh Beach, Thoi Son Island and Cai Be Floating Market so that by 2020 the province can become an ideal destination for those who want to discover the water resources and old houses in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta.

In addition, Tien Giang Province is making a plan for investment in conserving Dong Hoa Hiep Commune in Cai Be District as an old village to attract domestic and foreign visitors.

Surrounded by Cai Be River, myriad of canals and orchards with various kinds of fruit, Dong Hoa Hiep Commune has been selected to be conserved and bring into play the traditional cultural values of southern Vietnam. This initiative is also part of the Mekong Tourism Development Project to promote the role of the community in sustainable development through heritage tourism. Cai Be Port is also located in this commune. Its proximity to Vinh Long and Ben Tre is another advantage making it easy to arrange tours between Dong Hoa Hiep and neighboring provinces. Especially, it has many old houses which were built several hundred years ago in unique architectural styles. And another significant contributor to the development of local tourism is Mekong Lodge, a newly opened eco-resort in Dong Hoa Hiep Commune.
